Spanish for Spanish Speakers Book Drive

Hillview's 8th grade Spanish for Spanish Speakers class is running a book drive from Monday, December 5th to Friday, December 16th! All books donated will benefit George Mayne Elementary School in Alviso, CA, which doesn't have as many resources as we are fortunate enough to have at Hillview.

How can I donate books?
Books will be collected every morning before school AND at brunch from December 5th to December 16th.

What type of books should I donate?
New and lightly used books will be accepted. As George Mayne is an elementary school, please donate books that would be appropriate for students in grades K-5th. Also, both English and Spanish books will be accepted.

How many books should I donate?
Our school goal is 1000 books; If each student brings in at least two books, we will certainly reach our goal. Since this is an academy competition for the second trimester, the academies in each grade will win spirit points according to how many books each academy donates. So, donate as many books as possible!

How many spirit points?
The winning academy in each grade will win 20 spirit points, the academy in second place will win 10 spirit points, and the academy in third place will win 5 spirit points. This will give the academies who win a nice lead in the spirit competition!

November 7-10

Though the week of November 7th was short, with only four days, it proved to be a week filled with ASB events.

First, the We Scare Hunger canned food drive was concluded, with a total of 4,871 cans! This means that Hillview exceeded its goal of 3,500 cans by more than a thousand. To see the academy totals of the can food drive, please see the spirit scoreboard. Thank you so much to everyone who donated!

There was also a debate between the literary candidates on Monday. And finally, the results of the mock election are in! The Grinch, representing the villain party, won the literary presidency. Thanks to everyone who supported their candidate, made campaign posters, and/or voted.

We Scare Hunger Canned Food Drive

Please remember to donate cans to the We Scare Hunger canned food drive! Cans are collected in the PAC lobby every morning before school and are counted towards your academy. All cans donated go to Second Harvest Food Bank ( and support families in the Bay Area who cannot afford to buy food. The academies with the most cans will win spirit points. In fact, this is the largest spirit competition of the trimester. Last year, Hillview donated 3,100 food items and this year our goal is 3,500 cans. That means that if every student donated four cans, we would exceed our goal! We CAN do it!

Draco Malfoy
from Harry Potter series

I nominate Draco Malfoy for President because he exhibits presidential qualities such as intelligence, traditional values, and strength. The President of our great nation should have the intelligence to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world. The late Professor Snape, former Headmaster of Hogwarts and long-time Potions Master, said once that Draco Malfoy was “one of the finest minds I have ever had the honor of teaching.” As a member of one of the finest wizarding families, Malfoy understands the importance of traditional wizarding values. He would protect our way of life as President as much as he did as a student at Hogwarts. Finally, Draco Malfoy will protect America against all threats and will not hesitate to use force to keep us safe. When Professor Dumbledore stood in the way of Lord Voldemort’s return, Draco was prepared to do whatever it took to ensure the dominance of wizards over muggles. He would show similar strength against America’s enemies today. The choice is clear. Draco Malfoy’s intelligence, values and strength make him an ideal candidate for President of the United States of America.

Clubs Fair

Yesterday, Friday September 30th, Hillview held a clubs fair at lunch in the quad. While it may seem like a small ASB event, this gathering taught Hillview students all about the various meetings that occur during lunch all around Hillview. As Lucia Corona, a 6th grader and member of the Drama Club said, "They're fun and sometimes you get bored at lunch with nothing to do."

These clubs bring a great, inclusive culture to Hillview. Students can participate in the Art Club, Anime Club, French Culture Club, Dance and Cheer Club, Tech club, and Go Green Club, among many others. Rachel Warsaw, a member of the Drama Club and 7th grader explained, "They help people connect with each other and meet new people who have the same interests as they do."

So, why should Hillview students join clubs? It is valuable to become involved at Hillview and clubs are a great way to do that. "It is important for people to give back to the community because we have so much here, and it is the little things we can do to help that matter," said Gabby Silverman, an 8th grader and member of the Service Club. Gabby is right!

However, as Nathan Friedman, a 6th grader who joined both the Service and Gaming clubs during the fair put it, "I thought they'd be fun." Over all, lunch clubs are a fun and exciting way to spend time.

Orange Day - PTO Awareness

Two Fridays ago, we had an amazing time in the quad, with a game of musical chairs and a jelly bean count. The finest musical chair players each earned their academy a good amount of spirit points (1st place = 30, 2nd = 20, 3rd = 10). As for the jelly bean count, each winning guesser earned their academy 10 spirit points, and the closest guesser got a fabulous amount of jellybeans to eat! And even if you didn't participate in the activities, I hope you had a fun time enjoying the amazing music!
